Can your license be exchanged in Spain?

Spain allows residents to exchange licenses issued by EU/EEA countries and countries that have an applicable exchange agreement with Spain, subject to the requirements for that country and license category.

Some professional or heavy-vehicle license categories may require additional tests.

Check the current DGT country agreements

Eligibility depends on your license: the country that issued it, the license category, when it was obtained, and your residence status in Spain.

Before you start

You must meet the DGT requirements

Having a license from an eligible country does not automatically guarantee that it can be exchanged.

Your residence status matters

The exchange process is generally available to residents in Spain who meet the applicable administrative requirements.

When your license was obtained may matter

For many non-EU exchange agreements, a license obtained after becoming legally resident in Spain may not qualify, subject to the specific agreement and any exceptions.

Some categories require tests

Standard motorcycle and car categories often follow a simpler exchange process, while certain truck, bus, or professional categories may require additional testing.

Medical examination is separate

Where a medical fitness report is required, it must be completed through an authorized medical center. The medical-center fee is not included in Lakbyte’s €150 service price.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to take driving lessons in Spain?

For most eligible countries, no. Some license categories or country agreements may require additional testing.

Are government fees really included?

Yes. The €150 flat fee already includes the applicable DGT government fees.

What about the medical examination?

The medical exam is paid separately to an authorized medical center. We’ll help you find one nearby.

How long does the process take?

Processing times vary by Traffic Office and verification response times from your home country. Average: 1–3 months.
